The Best Moana Costume Ideas for Kids, Adults, and Families
We celebrated my daughter’s 5th birthday with a Moana-themed party complete with a Moana costume for her and her big sister.
I guess it was less of a “costume” and more of an adorable dress.
With the release of the second Moana movie approaching I think this is going to a huge hit for parties and celebrations.
What I love about the dress we ordered is that it’s something she could definitely wear again. Plus it wasn’t too expensive so that’s perfect!
My daughter’s Moana-themed birthday celebration was so fun and the Moana dress tied it all together.
In this posts we’ll explore the best Moana costumes and accessories out there. Whether you’re planning for Halloween, are headed to a luau or want to embrace the islands for your next birthday party celebration, this is the perfect spot for all things Moana.
Why a Moana Costume?
Moana certainly isn’t your traditional Disney Princess – although technically she is royalty.
She’s inspiring and has a deep sense of self-discovery.
Despite enormous challenges, she follows her heart and takes risks to save her people and embrace her true destiny. Moana teaches us the importance of staying true to ourselves, overcoming fears, and believing in our abilities, even when the path ahead seems uncertain.
Her journey reminds us that we all have the power to change our own stories and make a difference in the world.

Moana Character Costumes
Moana (of course)
- Wear a red crop top or fitted shirt paired with a brown or cream skirt. To mimic Moana’s iconic look, add a sash or wraparound fabric with Polynesian-inspired prints.
- Wear the distinct Moana necklace, featuring a large, circular pendant, symbolizing her connection to her ancestors and the ocean.
- Style your hair in loose, natural waves to resemble Moana’s long, brown locks. Or you can order a wig! Keep makeup fresh and minimal, focusing on a sun-kissed glow for a beach-ready vibe.
- The good thing about this costume is that it works for kids and adults alike. You can find an adorable Moana costume for kids and just as easily a costume for an adult woman as well.
Maui Costume
- Channel your inner demi-God with Maui costume items. We’re talking a curly long wig and Hawaiian leaf skirt.
- Buy some fake tattoos and put a big smile to your face.
- Add a necklace featuring bones and a sickle.
- Pair the costume with a fun and playful attitude to bring Maui to life. He’s so loveable, right?
- This is another one that’s great for kids and adults to wear as well.
Te Fiti Costume
- Go all green with a Te Fiti costume, featuring a full-body green suit and a wig.
- Add some creative makeup to create a glowing effect.
- Use green body paint to cover your entire body for a more authentic look. This is for the person who is “all in” when it comes to costumes.
Heihei (The Chicken)
- Create a feathery look using yellow, orange, and red fabric or feather boas to mimic Heihei’s colorful look
- Use felt or foam to make a quirky, spiky headpiece that resembles Heihei’s bright red comb and orange beak.
- Wear a yellow or orange jumpsuit or leggings paired with a loose, flowy top to give the appearance of feathers or feathers at the sleeves.
- Add some comedy as Heihei does in the movie by mimicking Heihei’s clumsy, clueless character.
Pua (the pig) Costumes
- Get a cute headband with pink felt ears and a pig snout, or use makeup to draw on a pig’s nose.
- Wear a light pink or soft beige dress or shirt paired with pink leggings or shorts to resemble Pua’s simple, lovable appearance.
- Add a small, curly pig tail using pink fabric or craft wire.
Moana Group Costume Ideas
This is such a good idea as a theme for the entire family. There are several characters, people, and creatures to choose from, and the costume design can be simple or intricate.
This would be great for Halloween or even a luau idea.
Moana DIY Costumes
- Use a red fitted shirt or crop top and pair it with a brown skirt or fabric you already have. Shop your closet and see what you already have that could work. Add a strip of fabric with Polynesian-inspired patterns or use fabric markers to create your own design for a makeshift sash.
- Make Moana’s iconic necklace with a large, circular pendant (use a plastic ring or a painted bottle cap) and attach it to a simple cord or string.
- Keep the thing simple by styling your natural hair in loose waves. For makeup, go for a sun-kissed, natural look using minimal products you already own, like bronzer for a beachy glow.
Moana Party Ideas
I made my daughter’s Moana cake using a Costco cake that I cut up and added a bunch of fun details to it. I made waves out of isomalt and sand out of brown sugar. It was such a blast to put together.
I also put together a big palm tree out of fresh pineapples. It made a fun and impactful centerpiece.
There are loads of luau ideas you can easily incorporate into your Moana theme. I found so many I couldn’t use them all.
We had an amazing time at my daughter’s Moana birthday party at our home. I wanted her to feel as special as she is and understand how loved she is. I think we accomplished that!
