The Kentucky Derby is just around the corner, and it’s time to put on those extravagant hats and ready your bets. But what about the most crucial element of all? Your Kentucky Derby dresses!
Since moving to the Louisville area from California years ago, I’ve asked my friends on social media to pick my Kentucky Derby dress for me each year. It’s by far the most popular poll I’ve ever done. And my friend don’t disappoint.
We’re about to jump on a fashion journey to find the perfect attire for the most prestigious horse race in the world.

The picture above includes the Kentucky Derby choices I had for the 2023 season. Choice “B” which came from Venus was the fan favorite. I think because of its vibrant colors of purple and pink. It seems feminine and classy – which is the perfect look for Churchill Downs. Choice “D” also came from Venus and the pink choice “C” came from Lulu’s. I kept both of those others for other occasions.

Whether you prefer classic Southern charm or contemporary chic, there’s a Kentucky Derby dress style for every fashionista. From flowing sundresses with floral prints to sophisticated cocktail attire, the options are as diverse as the Kentucky Derby crowd itself.
I think all of these dress choices above convey contemporary chic. The overall winner was the dark blue one-shoulder number. I love the deep color and vibrance of it. I feel like Derby, of all times, should be a place to display color. All of these choices came from Amazon I believe.

Opt for a feminine dress with delicate accents for those who crave a Southern Belle charm. Picture yourself sipping mint juleps on the veranda, the epitome of Southern grace and sophistication during the Kentucky Derby.
The dress pictured above was one I bought for $4 at Goodwill. I threw it as a choice on my Facebook poll thinking no one would pick it, but it was the overwhelming winner. I think the yellow and cute belt won people over.

What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than with a floral-inspired Kentucky Derby dress? Go with vibrant floral patterns and whimsical designs that capture the essence of the season.
The above picture was from my very first Derby. We had recently moved from California and I was several months pregnant with our son. I think the florals and bold colors made people instantly think of Churchill Downs. I think I should have a “Derby pregnant dresses” section next time!
I loved my hat that year. It was made my master milliner Jenny Pfanenstiel of Formé Millinery. I asked her to include my grandmother’s pendant in the middle of it and she did just that. I adore the personal touch.

I thought #3 (pictured above) conveyed all that lace and charm beautifully that people would like but #2 won out.
I was surprised!
I think people liked the off-the-shoulder look, big billowing arms, and fun bold stripes. It was a little something different and yet still charming. It made a statement.

Whether it’s your first time at the race or you’re a regular at the track, be sure to have fun and enjoy yourself. I would bring flip-flops or comfortable shoes to change into because it can be a super long day, especially if you’re in heels.

Whether you’re snapping selfies with friends or posing for the paparazzi, make sure your Kentucky Derby dress is camera-ready! Wear something you feel good in as it can be a long day, and you want to look great but also feel great as well. Be sure to wear something your can move in as well as there can be a good amount of walking, and you’ll hopefully be jumping up and down quite a big celebrating your big wins!
