Derby hat 101; how to crush that race day look
It’s time to rock that Kentucky derby hat for the fastest, and most fashionable, two minutes in sports.
Since moving to Kentucky years ago from San Diego, I’ve visited my fair share of Churchill Downs races. It’s an excuse to get decked out in something you otherwise would probably never wear. Think decadent feathered fascinators and opulent over-the-top wide-brimmed hats covered in flowers.
Yes.
Yes.
And more yes.
Any other time, you’d likely get the side-eye from people, but at the Kentucky Derby, it’s simply the standard.
So let’s pony up and explore the latest trends and best options when it comes to picking your best headwear. We’ll delve into the history, where to get the hat that fits your style, DIY options, and wearing the best look for your vibe.
History of Derby Hats
The history of Kentucky Derby hats is as vibrant as the race itself. Dating back to the late 19th century, when the Kentucky Derby first gained popularity as a premier horse racing event.
The tradition of wearing hats was propelled by derby founder Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., according to the Kentucky Derby’s website. He modeled the event after high-class European races where attendees had a strict dress code including wearing hats.
Spectators in Kentucky began to wear them for more than a fashion statement.
The May heat meant the sun would beat down on race goers. The wide-brimmed hats would be worn to protect attendees from burning. The hats soon enough evolved into an elaborate symbol of style and status.
For many attendees, the bigger the better and they would add flowers, ribbons and sparkles to them to showcase their style.
When the Derby began to be televised in the 1960s, it gave race goers an opportunity to get noticed on a national stage. Many women wanted to stand out and be seen on camera so again, the more extravagant the better.
Women soon started seeking out milliners for custom fascinators and hats that portrayed their unique style. It’s something that’s been amplified in recent years with social media.
Today, the tradition of wearing hats to the Kentucky Derby continues to thrive, with attendees looking forward to showing their creativity and flair while paying homage to the race’s rich history.
Current Trends in Derby Hats

- Statement Embellishments: From oversized bows to intricate floral arrangements, statement embellishments are taking center stage, allowing derby-goers to make a memorable entrance with their headwear.
- Vintage-Inspired Designs: Nostalgia meets modernity as vintage-inspired designs make a comeback, featuring classic shapes and retro details infused with a contemporary twist.
- Sustainable Materials: With a growing emphasis on sustainability, many Derby hat designers are opting for eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, hemp, and recycled fabrics, creating stylish headpieces with a conscience.
- Customization and Personalization: From monogrammed initials to sparkly adornments, customization and personalization are key trends. Racegoers like to express their individuality and make a bold fashion statement that’s uniquely their own.
Choosing the Perfect Derby Hat
Choosing the perfect Kentucky Derby hat is an artful balance of style, fit, and personal flair. Start by considering the overall look you want to achieve – whether it’s classic elegance or bold extravagance.
Are you wearing a stylish Derby dress or a floral jumpsuit to the track? The style of the outfit will dictate what wear on your head. Oh, and that begs the question – which to choose first the dress or the hat? Most designers I talk to say pick your outfit first, and then the hat.
Next, consider the shape of your face and the proportions of your outfit to ensure the hat complements your ensemble harmoniously.
Make sure the hat fits snuggly but isn’t too tight. Mine last year was a little big and kept slipping down over my forehead. That was annoying so I finally just took it off. You want to be comfortable.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles, colors, and embellishments until you find the one that makes you feel confident and fabulous for the big race day.
DIY Derby Hat Ideas
For my Derby hat in 2019, I borrowed the blue hat from. my friend and then added a few feathers (yellow and pink) so it would go with my yellow dress. I got my dress at Goodwill for $4 and bought the feathers at Hobby Lobby so the entire look cost me about $7. Don’t overlook the power of borrowing something since the hats and fascinators can be very expensive.
Also, I’m considering trying to make a fascinator out of fresh flowers this year. A local florist sent some to my workplace a few years back and I just loved them. We made fresh flower rings at my niece’s wedding shower recently, and now I’m inspired to go bigger with real flower headwear.
- Floral Fantasy Fascinator:
- Start with a plain base, such as a headband or a small hat base.
- Gather an assortment of artificial flowers in various sizes and colors.
- Use hot glue to attach the flowers onto the base, layering them to create dimension and visual interest.
- Add additional embellishments like feathers, ribbons, or beads for extra flair.
- Experiment with different arrangements until you achieve your desired look, then secure everything in place with glue.
- Ribbon and Bow Derby Hat:
- Begin with a plain straw hat or a wide-brimmed sun hat as your base.
- Select a variety of ribbons in complementary colors and patterns.
- Cut the ribbons into different lengths, then loop and fold them to create bows and rosettes.
- Arrange the bows and rosettes around the crown or brim of the hat, securing them with hot glue as you go.
- Add extra embellishments like faux pearls, gemstones, or lace for a touch of glamour.
- Once all the decorations are in place, allow the glue to dry completely before wearing your stylish creation to the Derby festivities.
Where to Find the Perfect Derby Hat
If you’re outside the Louisville, Kentucky, area there are some great finds online. Etsy is a great resource for beautifully crafted hats.
If you want to save money, Amazon also has a ton of options at affordable prices. You can always buy a cheaper one on Amazon and add your feathers and accessories to it to beef up the style. The navy blue one I wore with the striped blue dress in 2018 was like 15 bucks from Amazon. I think I actually bought it to wear to Del Mar Opening Day in California and then reused it.
Most of the Kentucky milliners also offer shipping. If you want something custom you need to put your order in as early as you can as many have a cut off date. They get crazy busy in the weeks leading to Derby.
My favorite right now is The Hat Doctor(Ilana Cogan) in the Louisville area. She’s custom-made my hat for Derby 2024. Cogan has graduated medical school and is completing her residency and she makes insanely beautiful hats on the side. I think she just doesn’t sleep in the weeks leading up to Derby. I like pretty much everything she makes. Super talented and she has a distinct style.
The Hat Girls are a popular Louisville hat-making duo. I feel like a lot of their designs are larger in size, those can be pricey, but they make a statement. They made my hat for Oaks this year which is the day before Derby when the Phillies run.
Tony Leon Designs does great work. Tony Wilson-Browder says from a young age he’s been fascinated with hats and would take apart his mom’s hat just to put it back together. How sweet is that!? He uses a lot of vibrant colors and unique designs.
Formé Millinery Co is another beautiful option in Louisville. Jenny Pfanenstiel has crafted hats for celebrities like Michelle Obama and Madonna and she also custom-made mine the first year I moved to Kentucky. I asked her to add my grandmother’s black sparkly earring to it and she did and I loved it. She’s also got a collection for Vineyard Vines and Woodford Reserve. She’s got plenty of men’s Kentucky Derby hats as well.
Styling Tips for Race Day
- Embrace Tradition: Opt for classic pieces with a modern twist. A well-tailored suit or a chic dress in pastel hues or floral prints is a timeless choice that pays homage to Derby tradition.
- Elevate with Accessories: Elevate your look with carefully chosen accessories. A statement hat or fascinator is a must-have accessory for Derby Day, so choose one that complements your outfit while adding a touch of flair.
- Pay Attention to Footwear: Comfortable yet stylish footwear is essential for navigating the grounds of Churchill Downs. Opt for low wedges in a neutral tone that coordinates with your outfit, ensuring you can enjoy the day in both comfort and style. I always like to bring flip flops to change into later in the day.
- Mind the Weather: Be prepared for the unpredictable Derby weather by layering smartly. Consider bringing a lightweight jacket or shawl in case of cooler temperatures. You can’t bring in an umbrella so invest in a cheap clear poncho. They hike up the price big time if you try to buy them at the track. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
- Finish with Finer Details: Pay attention to the finer details to complete your look. A polished hairstyle, subtle makeup, and delicate jewelry add the perfect finishing touches, enhancing your overall appearance without overshadowing your ensemble.
Conclusion
Whether you prefer bold and extravagant designs or understated and classic styles, there’s a Derby hat for every taste and personality, making it a beloved tradition that continues to captivate enthusiasts year after year. And this year is the 150th running of the Derby so why not make a splash?
