The Kentucky Derby is just around the corner, and it’s time to put on those extravagant hats and ready your bets- while wearing a gorgeous dress!
Since moving to the Louisville area from California years ago, I’ve asked my friends on social media to pick my Kentucky Derby dress each year. It’s by far the most popular poll I’ve ever done. And my friends don’t disappoint!

Top Trends for 2026
1. Classic Red and Pink
It’s called the Run for the Roses for a reason. You can’t go wrong with the classic color red. The day before the Kentucky Derby is known as The Kentucky Oaks- also referred to as “Lillies for the FIllies” so pink is a super popular color for that day.
2. Coordinating Not Matching
If you’re going with a partner or friend group, the key is coordinating looks, not being matchy-matchy. Think about colors that compliment each other. I love red and purple together so that’s why my co-anchor and I chose that combo for our morning show coverage on Derby Day. Also think about coordinating/complimentary colors when it comes to your accessories.
Another trend I’m seeing for Derby 2026 is the puffed sleeves. Notice my friend was ahead of the trend with her sleeves on her red dress.
3. Apple Green and Vibrant “Off-beat” Colors
Apple Green is a hot color for 2026 – especially on runways and other fashion forward spots. Consider other hot colors right now like Chartreuse, and Phthalo Green. Those colors are great especially when paired with bright pink like fushia and candy pink. I also love green paired with a strong Cobalt Blue,

Florals are always a classic look for the Kentucky Derby and I think we’ll see lots of them in 2026. An easy way to incorporate this stylish and femine look is through your headpiece or Derby hat.

If you want to be on trend for 2026, think asymetrical lines both along the hemline and even higher. This adds some interest to your dress and take the style up a notch.

The dress pictured above was one I bought for $4 at Goodwill. I threw it as a choice on my Facebook poll thinking no one would pick it, but it was the overwhelming winner. I think the yellow and cute belt won people over.

The above picture was from my very first Derby. We had recently moved from California and I was several months pregnant with our son. I think the florals and bold colors made people instantly think of Churchill Downs. I think I should have a “Derby pregnant dresses” section next time!
I loved my hat that year. It was made my master milliner Jenny Pfanenstiel of Formé Millinery. I asked her to include my grandmother’s pendant in the middle of it and she did just that. I adore the personal touch.

I thought #3 (pictured above) conveyed all that lace and charm beautifully that people would like but #2 won out.
I was surprised!
I think people liked the off-the-shoulder look, big billowing arms, and fun bold stripes. It was a little something different and yet still charming. It made a statement.

There is something so elegant about lace so incorporating it into your Derby dress is a perfect idea to elevate the elegance. Even just adding a lace detail can go a long way to making your look timeless.

Stylish but Comfortable
Wear something you feel good in as it can be a long day, and you want to look great but also feel great as well. Be sure to wear something your can move in as well as there can be a good amount of walking, and you’ll hopefully be jumping up and down quite a big celebrating your big wins!
I would bring flip-flops or comfortable shoes to change into because it can be a super long day, especially if you’re in heels.
