11+ Best Mudroom Ideas to Elevate your Entryway
The best mudroom ideas are here to transform your entryway into a functional and stylish space!
Mudrooms are the unsung heroes of home organization, providing a designated area to corral clutter and keep your living spaces tidy.
We recently remodeled our first floor and our mudroom needed to be totally revamped to fit our 4 kids needs along with our puppy. That room is now one of my very favorites in the house.
In this post, we’ll explore a variety of creative and practical mudroom designs, from storage solutions to aesthetic enhancements, to help you maximize both form and function in this essential transitional space.
What’s a mudroom anyway?
A mudroom is a transitional space typically located near the entry of a home, serving as a buffer between the outdoors and the interior living spaces.
It’s designed to handle the mess and clutter of daily comings and goings, providing storage and organization solutions for coats, shoes, bags, and other outdoor gear.
Often equipped with benches, hooks, shelves, and sometimes even a sink or washer/dryer, mudrooms help keep the rest of the house clean and organized by containing the mess in one designated area.
Additionally, mudrooms may also serve as a convenient spot for pet supplies, sports equipment, and other miscellaneous items, further contributing to the functionality of the space.
Mudroom things to keep in mind
When designing a mudroom, several key factors should be considered to ensure optimal functionality and style.
Firstly, assess the available space and layout to determine the best configuration for storage solutions, seating, and traffic flow.
If you’re adding a mudroom bench that’s a key component to the room. So think about spacing, if you want it cushioned, and whether to have open space beneath it or functional drawers.
Secondly, prioritize durable materials and finishes that can withstand heavy use and frequent exposure to dirt and moisture. Additionally, incorporate ample storage options such as cubbies, hooks, and shelves to accommodate various items like coats, shoes, and bags.
Lastly, don’t forget to infuse the space with personal touches and decorative elements to make it feel welcoming and reflective of your home’s style. By keeping these considerations in mind, you can create a mudroom that not only keeps your entry organized but also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of your home.
Choose unexpected flooring if you like. This is a small space so you can add a flare of style you might not otherwise want to try in a bigger section of your house.
Mudroom Ideas
Elegant Mudroom
The mudroom pictured above is a showstopper. The white built-ins and Dutch front door hit all the right design elements. What a pretty sight for guests to walk past to access the bathroom or whatever is beyond.
Colorful Mudroom
Pictured above is a fantastically colorful mudroom from kellygolightly.com. Great use of bright, bold, and interesting colors. It’s like having your own Van Gogh painting all across your interior.
Farmhouse Mudroom
The one pictured above is the epitome of farmhouse charm. Choose warm woods to boost that farmhouse look. I think a Dutch door is especially quaint so if you’re able to do that in your space more power to you.
This would be especially helpful if you want to allow fresh air in without letting out your dog. Speaking of pets, bonus points if you’ve got a chicken like the one above.
Mudroom Entryway Nook
The above picture posted to Pinterest by SawDust Sorcery is a great option especially if you don’t have a ton of space. The colors here are soothing and I love the addition of the light strip in the nook area to brighten things up.
Mudroom Closet
Again if you’re low on space you could always make a mudroom closet. These barn doors from Etsy shop LumberLovin would make the perfect cover for all the junk you’d like to hide.
Functional Mudroom
The entryway pictured above is beautiful with the metal mesh detail on each door. It hides school backpacks and adds a beautiful rustic feel to the space. It allows you to keep your mudroom organized and stylish.
Green Thumb Lover Mudroom
I like the idea of incorporating greenery into the mudroom like the one posted above from Etsy shop BuffaloRoamCo
Mudrooms can be dirty and stinky, I’ve got 4 kids I know how it goes, so adding some fresh potted plants can greenery can counter some of that.
Pet Lover Mudroom
My husband and I love to visit the Homearama featured homes in Louisville. A trend I’ve seen quite a bit lately is incorporating pet-friendly amenities into the mudroom like giving your animal their own space.
One of the Homearama Homes featured in Louisville in 2022 (pictured above) includes a pet shower for easy bathing. How cute is the dog wallpaper too?
Another Louisville Homearama house from 2017 featured above includes dog bowls that pull out from a drawer in the mudroom.

Vintage Classic Mudroom
The photo above is cool in many ways but it looks like something you’d find in an historic home. According to the listing, this was part of a remodel for snow lovers. Makes sense considering the skis and poles hanging on the right side.
I love that all the junk can be easily stuffed away and hidden by the large cubby locker doors. The large cabinets have metal mesh on the doors so the snowy coats get airflow and can dry.
I also considered using vintage lockers in our mudroom remodel before we settled on having my husband make our cubbies. I love the idea of using something vintage in a new and unexpected way. You can find lots of vintage lockers online on sites like Etsy and eBay. The ones listed above came from Rejuvenation and were listed for $2500.
Mudroom Organization Tips
Establish Zones in Your Mudroom:
Designate specific areas for different items such as coats, shoes, bags, shoe storage, and accessories to keep everything organized and easily accessible.
Use Vertical Space in Your Mudroom:
Install hooks, shelves, and racks on the walls to maximize vertical storage and keep the floor clear. This helps prevent clutter from accumulating and makes it easier to clean the space. This is especially helpful for larger pieces of sports equipment.
Invest in Mudroom Storage Solutions
Utilize storage benches, cubbies, baskets, and bins to corral items like shoes, hats, and gloves. Opt for multifunctional furniture pieces that offer both seating and storage to maximize space efficiency. Any piece that can do double duty is ideal.
Label Everything in Your Mudroom:
Use labels or tags to identify storage bins and baskets, making it easier for family members to find what they need and maintain organization.
Regular Mudroom Maintenance:
Establish a routine for tidying up the mudroom, including wiping down surfaces, vacuuming or sweeping floors, and decluttering regularly to keep the space neat and functional. Clean those dirty shoes and stay organized.
Seasonal Mudroom Rotation:
Rotate seasonal items in and out of storage to keep the mudroom clutter-free and ensure that only the essentials are accessible at any given time.
Incorporate a Mudroom Drop Zone:
Designate a specific area for keys, mail, and other everyday essentials to prevent them from getting lost or misplaced.
Keep Cleaning Supplies Handy in Your Mudroom:
Store cleaning supplies such as a broom, mop, and vacuum cleaner in the mudroom for quick and easy access to clean up messes as they occur.
Consider Your Family’s Needs When it Comes to Your Mudroom:
Customize the organization system to suit your family’s lifestyle and habits, making adjustments as needed to ensure that the mudroom remains functional for everyone.
Add Personal Touches in Your Mudroom:
Incorporate decorative elements such as artwork, plants, and family photos to make the mudroom feel welcoming and reflective of your family’s personality and style.
