So, let’s get started on this wild and witty costume journey!
My family chose the Despicable ME theme for Halloween last year because the franchise is one of our favorites, and also because I adore Vector and wanted to be him for a day! My son wore a Gru costume and my 7-year-old daughter dressed as Lucy Wilde.

What you need for your own easy Lucy Wilde costume
Before we dive into the costume-making shenanigans, let’s gather our supplies. Here’s a list of what you’ll need:
- Turquoise dress– honestly any one will do but the one Lucy wears is simple and sleeveless
- Orange-red wig- her orange-red hair is distinct and bright – like her personality.
- Red & White Polka Dot Scarf- This is one of the signature accessories for Lucy Wilde.
Turquoise sunglasses- Lucy wears these on top of her head
That’s it.
I’d suggest buying a dress you’ll wear again.
My daughter chose more of a summer dress because you see Lucy’s arms in many scenes.
My daughter has worn that dress plenty of times after Halloween. You might even find yourself wearing the scarf again in another capacity. Regarding the orange wig, you’re set for next Halloween if you want to channel Thema Flintstone or Lucille Ball.
Other Accessories
If you want to go the extra mile, consider adding a toy freeze ray or a stuffed minion as your sidekick. These little details will surely make your costume even more hilarious and memorable. Other additional options include:
- Turquoise Trench coat- Gru’s partner wears one in several movie scenes.
- Red Lipstick because one of the more memorable Lucy lines involves her pulling out her “lipstick taser!”
- Strappy heels
ID card that says AVL (anti-villain league) on it because Lucy carries one.
- Toy Darts- Bonus points if you write “moose tranquilizer” on them. You’ll remember Lucy helps prevent an embarrassing evening for Gru by tranquilizing his obnoxious date.
The DIY Lucy Wilde Costume Guide
Putting it all together should take you all of about 5 minutes.
Slip on your turquoise dress, and don your orange/red wig. If you already have red hair, like me, you could skip the wig altogether and just put your own hair in a high bun.
Stick your turquoise sunglasses on top of your head. Wrap your polka dot scarf around your neck and you’re ready. If you’ve opted for the turquoise trench coat, you can also throw that on.
We didn’t make time to do this, but I thought it would be cute to print out a fake ID that says Anti-Villain League on it to add to the costume accessories. Don’t forget to add your warm, fun personality to the ensemble.
Why Lucy Wilde?
Honestly, why not? She is a smart, affable, approachable character in Despicable Me, and dressing like her is super simple. She’s got big eyes and an even bigger off-the-chart personality. A lot of times, I’m very last minute with planning these costumes and this choice of embodying Lucy lends itself well to that.
Other Lucy Wildes who nailed their costumes
I think this is a popular family or group costume because there are so many fun characters to chose from. It’s also perfect for a trunk-or-treat.
Here are some other families who rose to the “despicable” challenge!
I thought the family pictured above from Coolest-homemade-costumes.com did a great job. How they got their baby to wear a wig, and that ginormous nose for Gru… I’ll never know but I’m impressed! They made the Despicable Me franchise proud! I love the fact that Margo, Edith, and Agnes are included in this image.
I thought the family in the pic above from jujubeeillustrations.blogspot did a great job with their Despicable Me costumes. Again with that nose on Gru! It’s truly amazing! The red hair on Lucy looks like it actually belongs to her.
I love the family in this Pinterest photo. Lucy here is a goofball and her orange-red hair is perfection! Gru is serious and not overdone. They all know their roles – even the minion kids. They look like a fun bunch!
Lucy’s role in the Despicable Me franchise
Lucy Wilde is a goofy Anti Villain League agent who goes to find Gru and recruit him to the crime-fighting AVL agency in the Despicable Me movies. She walks in and becomes Gru’s partner to solve a mystery and Lucy becomes the love interest and later wife of Gru. By marrying Gru, she becomes the adoptive mother to Margo, Edith and Agnes.
I think she’s a great adoptive mother. She says she’s always wanted to be a mom. In the later movies, you see her love for them grow. Gru’s partner is seen protecting and watching out for Margo, Edith, and Agnes.
One of the biggest impacts Lucy Wilde has had on the Despicable Me franchise is the addition of a strong, independent female character. In a series that’s all about the reformed supervillain, Gru, Lucy is a strong counterbalance who can hold her own in action scenes.
Her experience, one-liners, determination, and dedication to her job as an AVL agent have made her a fan favorite, especially among young girls.
Lucy also brought romance to the movie. Her relationship with Gru adds depth to his character and gives us sweet and funny moments in the movies.
She’s portrayed by actress Kristen Wiig. Wiig talked in an interview about how much of comedy is timing. She says it’s something that’s done really well in the Despicable Me movies. “The comedic timing in this movie I think is so good even the minions, even the little girls. I mean just… the editing of the movie is really funny,” said Wiig.
She said the unconventional love story between Gru and Lucy, how her character finds Gru and becomes his love interest is part of what drew her to the script.
“You don’t want the audience two steps ahead of you,” said Wiig. “Especially in a love story where you know people are going to end up together. It’s hard to keep it fresh and unpredictable and I think this movie is a good example of that surprise.”
