How To Coordinate Perfect Family Halloween Costumes Without The Stress

If you’re looking for the most fun family Halloween costumes to bring your crew together in a stress-free way, you’re in the right spot.

Every year my 4 kids, hubby and I vote on a family Halloween costume for our church trunk-or-treat. I know there’s only so long my kids will go along with this so I try hard to enjoy every minute.

We usually try to pick something that everyone is happy with and something that’s not too “costume-ish” for my husband who isn’t big on costumes in general. He’ll go along with it once a year though because he knows it makes me, and that is one of the million reasons I love him.

Recently we’ve done The Addams Family and Despicable Me and we’re still trying to decide about this year’s group theme.

The key for me is planning. Like at least a month ahead. Whenever I wait until the week before Halloween I get stressed out and spend more money. I also like to use what I already own because nothing is more stressful than buying a costume you’ll wear once.

So if you’re looking for super fun ideas, let’s go!

Our whole family embracing the Peter Pan group costume

Classic Favorites

  • Create a cohesive look with a family Halloween costume idea that’s a classic favorite, such as a Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland costume. We did Peter Pan a month after our 3rd son was born and he was the tiniest and cutest Captain Hook you’ve ever seen in your life! Our poor dog’s costume was a little too small but she was dressed at the alligator!
  • Consider a family Halloween costume that’s a blast from the past, such as a retro-inspired costume featuring classic monsters like mummies, vampires, witches, and werewolves.

TV-Inspired Halloween Costumes

  • Channel your favorite movie or TV characters with a family Halloween costume, such as a Stranger Things or Game of Thrones costume.
  • Embrace your inner oddness like my family did last year dressing as The Addams Family.

Movie-Inspired Family Halloween Costumes

  • Get inspired by beloved characters from classic movies, such as Toy Story, The Wizard of Oz, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • The above picture is my family’s take on the Wizard of Oz. I wanted to use what I already had instead of spending more money. I had the friendly lion costume from a workgroup theme we did in San Diego. My son already had a tiger outfit because he was obsessed with tigers for a while. My other son had a coat with bear ears on it. I found this shirt for my husband that said “Oh my!” Remember when I said he doesn’t love dressing up? The t-shirt was perfect for him! So we were dressed as “Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!” A nod to the chant repeated in The Wizard of Oz.
  • My family dressed as Grease a few years ago and it was one of our favorites. I loved that my infant was a beauty school dropout. It still makes me laugh!

Music-Inspired Costumes

  • Get rockin’ with a music-inspired family Halloween costume, such as a KISS or Beatles costume.
  • Choose your favorite country artist or country band. My daughter dressed as Dolly Parton a few years back. To make it more of a group theme, you could incorporate other country crooners like Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, and Billy Ray Cyrus. If you do Billy Ray though you’ve gotta do throwback Billy Ray with the mullet hair.
  • Choose a family Halloween costume that’s perfect for music lovers, such as a guitar or music note costume.

Disney and Broadway-Inspired Family Halloween Costumes

Magical and Musical

  • Create a magical and musical family Halloween costume inspired by Disney or Broadway, such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, or a Mickey Mouse costume.
  • My girls and I dressed as a Frozen them to go to the Frozen Broadway Musical. I told my little Elsa and Anna that I would wear what they wanted and they picked Sven – the reindeer. Of course! That’s what I get for allowing an 8-year-old and 4-year-old to dress me.
  • Our family also did the Beauty and the Beast theme for our church trunk or treat. Our dog was even dressed as the magical pillow bless her heart! I was pregnant that year with our daughter. Not sure if I’ve ever seen a pregnant Belle prior to that!

Story-book costume ideas

  • Harry Potter Family: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Professor Dumbledore.
  • Where the Wild Things Are: Max and the Wild Things for a whimsical touch.
  • Little Red Riding Hood Cast: Little Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, Grandma, and the Huntsman. My family and I did the Little Red Riding Hood theme for our church trunk or treat a few years back. My son was the big bad wolf and he lay in “granny’s bed” in the back of my mini-van. We even got our dog in on it and dressed her as the big bad wolf dressed as Grandma.
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Friends: The Caterpillar, the Butterfly, and other colorful insects and fruits.
