The Best Mary Poppins Costume Ideas: Embrace the Magic
Oh, the magic of a Mary Poppins costume!
For our family costume for our annual church trunk or treat, my people decided on Mary Poppins.
We went to see the musical a while back because our friend was in it and the kids have been singing the songs ever since!
Putting together your own Mary Poppins costume isn’t hard at all. There are lots of supporting characters, too, which makes it a great choice for a group.
Whether you’re going to bewitch your friends at a costume party or just want to add a bit of Mary magic to your life let’s get into the world of top hats, scarves, and of course the umbrella!

Mary Poppins Ideas
- Get inspired by the original movie and make your own Mary Poppins costume for dress-up fun.
- We ordered our Mary Poppins costume online so all of our pieces came together.
- You could piece it together yourself with a long dark skirt, white shirt, gray button-up jacket, red tie, black hat with flowers, carpet bag and umbrella.
- Our family has embraced Despicable Me costumes, Little Red Riding Hood and more but there’s something extra special about taking on Mary Poppins.
- If you want something a little more glamorous you could dress as Mary Poppins from the cartoon scene where she and Bert are in white and red dressy clothing.
Other Characters from Mary Poppins
- Dress as a Bert and other chimney sweepers. This one is easy as you need a vest and a newsboy hat. These are the hats I ordered my husband and son. You can wear whatever other dark clothing you already own. Hold a broom or chimney sweeper and smear some dirt on your face.
- Dress as the Banks children with a fancy dress and suit
- Dress as Mr. Banks in a suit.
- Embrace the style of Mrs. Banks complete with a “Women’s Suffrage” sign since she’s all about getting women the right to vote.
- Channel your inner creature lover and dress as the bird lady (like I did) from the Feed the Birds scene. I covered myself in these fake clip-on birds and carried a basket for the “tuppence.”
- I also ordered chocolate-covered coins to serve as my tuppence.
- If you have extra folks people can dress as penguins.
- You could also dress as one of the bank managers with top hats and fake money.
Mary Poppins Halloween Costumes and Accessories
- Make a Mary Poppins Halloween costume with a jolly holiday theme, with a black hat with flowers on it and a “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” sign.
- Pair a Mary Poppins costume with a Bert costume for a fun couples costume.
- Add some magic to your costume with a DIY magic bag, like Mary’s carpet bag.
- Accessorise with a chimney sweep hat and a “Step in Time” sign for a fun costume.
- Add some props, an umbrella or a spoonful of sugar to finish the look.
Mary Poppins Trunk-or-Treat
- There are loads of options for embracing Mary Poppins for a church or school trunk-or-treat.
- My neighbor just happens to own a very large penguin which we borrowed since there is a dancing Penguin scene in Mary Poppins. I’m also all about using what we already have and not buying extra stuff so borrowing something is right up my alley!
- I got a foam board from Lowe’s for my background and cut out buildings from Dollar Tree thick poster board.
- I then poked holes in the board and taped fairy lights to the back for the board. My daughter cut out little yellow squares that we glued on the board to make it look like windows in the buildings.
- I added a floating Mary Poppins in the sky out of paper I cut out.
- We also made a bunch of brightly colored kites from Dollar Tree poster board. and hung them on a circle metal background that I ordered a while back for my niece’s wedding shower.
- One of my favorite parts was the cardboard box chimneys I painted to look like brick. I put my son’s fog machine in the box to make it look like the chimney was actually smoking. That fog machine has come in super handy as we used it for last year’s Addams Family theme.
